15 years ago Gary died from SADS in Clondalkin with no symtoms or warning just a healthy young man walking along in the prime of his life….he couldn’t even put his hands out as he fell to the ground when his heart stopped suddenly.He lived in Monastery estate from the day he was born and although he was years not living there he died on his way to his friends house in that very estate where we grew up aged just 25yrs.His two friends that were with him tried everything they could to revive him.They didn’t know it but they had little chance without a defribilator and even with an ambulanc...

15 years ago Gary died from SADS in Clondalkin with no symtoms or warning just a healthy young man walking along in the prime of his life….he couldn’t even put his hands out as he fell to the ground when his heart stopped suddenly.He lived in Monastery estate from the day he was born and although he was years not living there he died on his way to his friends house in that very estate where we grew up aged just 25yrs.His two friends that were with him tried everything they could to revive him.They didn’t know it but they had little chance without a defribilator and even with an ambulance just coming from nearby Belgard Road it wasn’t quick enough in these very common tragic circumstances.When I say very common I am not exagerating.For a year or so at the time I thought it was a rare event and only thru time and by educating myself I realised that its far from a rare event.Roughly 1 person in Ireland under 35 yrs dies suddenly from SADS every week.I have letters 10 years old to various organisations in relation to lack of access to defribillators in schools especially for kids and young teenagers aswell as in general public places(Celbridge has 1).More recently my gripe is that any family who can be tested genetically in hereditary circumstances is delayed by the fact that we have only 1 genetic testing facility in the whole of Ireland.My point is that with lack of cash and resources now and not much progress on these issues when we did have the only thing we can do is put what little resources we can get our hands on into screening for SADS.A charity that gets no government funding called “The Mater Foundations Family Heart Screening Clinic”does an unbelievable job in this vital area and from first hand experience I know that each year whatever money I can give them is very well spent.I am Donnchadh and I have set up this tribute fund for my brother Gary and would greatly appreciate anything you can donate to help this very practical and necessary screening process.Thanks
